Geely EX2 vs BYD Atto 1 vs MG4 EV Urban: Which Small EV Wins on Value?

If you're cross-shopping the small electric hatch segment right now, three names are dominating the conversation: the new Geely EX2, the BYD Atto 1, and the MG4 EV Urban. The EX2 and Atto 1 in particular are Australia's two cheapest EVs, so it's worth knowing exactly how they stack up.

The Atto 1 currently holds the title of Australia's cheapest EV, with the EX2 slotting in just above it — around $2,500 more for the entry Complete grade. Both undercut the MG4 EV Urban comfortably.

Space and practicality

This is where the EX2 pulls ahead. Despite similar external dimensions, the EX2 offers a considerably bigger boot than the Atto 1, plus a front trunk (frunk) and extra under-seat storage the Atto 1 doesn't have, useful for charging cables or shopping runs around the Peninsula. The EX2 also runs a tighter turning circle, making it easy to place in tight car parks like Bayside Shopping Centre.

Driving character

The EX2 uses a rear-mounted motor with rear-wheel drive and multi-link independent rear suspension, a more sophisticated setup than the Atto 1's front-wheel-drive, torsion-beam layout. If you compare the EX2 Complete against the equivalently priced Atto 1 Premium, the Atto 1 counters with more outright power and a quicker 0-100km/h time, so the two take genuinely different approaches to the same price bracket.

Warranty and ownership

Every Geely sold in Australia, EX2 included, comes backed by a 7-year/unlimited km warranty, an 8-year/unlimited km battery warranty, and up to 7 years of roadside assistance. That's a long runway of cover for buyers who might be trying an EV, or a Chinese brand for the first time.

Launch incentives

Right now, the EX2 has an edge most rivals can't match: order and take delivery between 12 July and 31 August, and you'll get a free 7kW home charger and a premium paint upgrade included, plus access to a 0.68% comparison rate on 36-month finance.

The verdict

The Atto 1 wins on the lowest possible entry price. The EX2 answers back with more space, a more capable chassis, and a stronger ownership package, all for a modest premium. If you're deciding between these three, it's worth putting the EX2 on your test drive list before you commit.
